About Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme

One of the five schemes of the National Social Assistance Program (NSAP) is the Indira Gandhi National Widows Pension Scheme (IGNWPS). Widows aged between 40 and 59 years and living below the poverty line are eligible to apply under IGNWPS. The beneficiary will receive a monthly pension of Rs 200. Its purpose is to provide vital financial support. The Ministry of Rural Development administers the NSAP. The program is implemented in both rural and urban areas.

NSAP is an essential part of the administrative process for implementation of the Government Policy which empowers the Government to administer a range of health schemes under the scheme as written in the Constitution of India. Its purpose is to provide citizens with adequate sources of income, improve people’s livelihood, improve public health, and provide free education for children.

Identification of the Beneficiaries for Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension

As per the rules laid down by the Ministry of Rural Development (MORD) for the BPL Census 2002, rural NSAP beneficiaries are selected from the BPL lists prepared by the states/Union Territories. Beneficiaries of the NSAP program will be identified in urban areas based on the BPL list created by the Ministry of Urban Housing and Poverty Alleviation’s Poverty Alleviation Program. Assistance under NOAPS can be distributed at the community level such as Gramme Sabha in rural areas and neighborhood committees/mohallas in urban areas, besides disbursement of benefits through recipients’ accounts in banks, Postal Savings Banks or Postal Money.
